They have already sacrificed their lives on Earth to live in Kandor so Supergirl can be reunited with her birth parents. A well-intentioned society let them adopt a girl very similar to Linda, not realizing that she serves as nothing more than a constant reminder of their loss. To compound their problems, the second adopted daughter also finds her real parents are alive and well, so they lose her too. It's no wonder when a shot of poison pushes Edna over the deep end.
