Welcome back to On Screen Soon, our look at the comics behind the movies and shows coming next. We've been a family comic shop since 1988, from Northampton, MA to Los Angeles, CA, and few franchises have moved the back-issue market like the Spider-Verse films. Every trailer sends collectors hunting for Miles, Gwen and Hobie. This week we're doing the whole multiverse, including the books that look like keys but aren't.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse: The Finale Swings In
The news: Sony Pictures Animation has Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set for June 18, 2027. It's the third and final chapter of the Miles Morales trilogy. The date has moved a few times. The film was first set for 2024 and pulled after the 2023 strikes, then dated for June 2027. In September 2025 Sony moved it up one week to June 18.
Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing. Plot details are still under wraps, but Across the Spider-Verse left Miles stranded on Earth-42, where his father is gone and that world's Miles is the Prowler. Gwen is out looking for him. The cast from Across is expected back, including Shameik Moore as Miles and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen. Sony hasn't confirmed the full cast list, so we'll update when it does.
The Keys
- Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011): 1st appearance of Miles Morales, by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Released in August 2011, just after the death of Ultimate Peter Parker. This is the top Spider-Verse book of the modern era.
- Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014): 1st appearance of Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy of Earth-65), by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez. In her world, Gwen got bitten instead of Peter.
- Spider-Gwen #1 (Feb. 2015): Gwen's first solo series, launched after fans went wild for her debut.
- Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 #10 (2014): 1st appearance of Spider-Punk (Hobie Brown of Earth-138), by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel, released in November 2014 during the original "Spider-Verse" event.
Ultimate Fallout #4: Know Which One You're Buying
This is the most important thing in this post. Ultimate Fallout #4 exists in a lot of versions. There's the 2011 first print, a 1:25 ratio variant, a second print with a Sara Pichelli cover, a third print, international editions, and a 2021 wave of facsimile editions and convention exclusives.
The 2011 first print is the true key and the one that carries the big money. Second prints and ratio variants are their own collectible tier. The 2021 reprints and facsimiles are the affordable way in: same story, same cover idea, a fraction of the cost. They're great for readers and gifts. Just don't pay first-print money for a reprint. Always check the indicia and the printing.

Miles Morales
- Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011): The original 2011 book. 1st Miles Morales. If you only buy one comic for this movie, this is it.
- Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011), variant: A 2011 variant of the same issue, for the collector who wants a second copy that isn't the same cover.
- Ultimate Fallout #4 (2021): A 2021 edition from the facsimile era. This is the affordable way to own the debut. It's a reprint, not the 2011 first print.
- Spider-Man #1 (2016): Bendis and Pichelli bring Miles into the main Marvel Universe after Secret Wars. On sale February 2016, it's the start of his first run in the main universe.
- Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 (2022): The December 2022 relaunch by Cody Ziglar and Federico Vicentini. It's a clean jumping-on point for new fans after the movie.
Gwen, Hobie and the Multiverse
- Spider-Gwen Vol. 2 #1 (2015): Gwen's All-New, All-Different relaunch from late 2015, by Latour and Rodriguez. Note that this is the second Spider-Gwen #1. Her first solo #1 came out in February 2015.
- Marvel's Voices: Spider-Verse #1 (2023): An April 2023 anthology with stories starring Miles, Ghost-Spider (Gwen) and Spider-Punk, plus Silk and Web-Weaver. It's a fun, cheap way to get most of the movie's lineup in one book.
- Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2022): Heads up, this is not the 2014 Spider-Gwen key. It's issue #2 of the 2022 series, released in August 2022. It's an anthology that includes a Ghost-Spider story. It's a good read and priced like one, but it's not her first appearance.
Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014), Spider-Gwen #1 (Feb. 2015) and Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 #10 aren't in stock right now. Email us to get on our want list.

The Collector's Take
The Spider-Verse films have a history of putting new characters into the market. Fans want Miles, Gwen and Hobie on their shelves before the trailers drop. If the 2011 Ultimate Fallout #4 is the dream, start with it. If it isn't in the budget, a 2021 edition plus the 2016 and 2022 Miles #1s gives you the whole arc of the character for a lot less. And as always, check the year on anything labeled "Edge of Spider-Verse #2."

- Man of Tomorrow: July 9, 2027

Expect keys tied to all three in upcoming issues of On Screen Soon.
