Hollywood's Indie Shopping Spree: Geiger, King of Spies, D'Orc & More

Welcome back to On Screen Soon, our look at the comics behind the movies and shows coming next. We've been a family comic shop since 1988, from Northampton, MA to Los Angeles, CA, and we've learned that the Hollywood bump isn't just for Marvel and DC. When a streamer options a creator-owned book, the #1 is usually still cheap, and collectors move fast. This week: the indie titles Hollywood has picked up lately, and which #1s are worth a look.

One thing first. An option means a studio bought the right to try to make something. A greenlight or series order means it's actually being made. We'll tell you which is which.

Geiger: Netflix Picks Up the Atomic Cowboy

The news: What's on Netflix reported on August 31, 2026 that Netflix optioned Geiger in July 2026. It's an option, not a greenlight, and Netflix hasn't commented. An earlier TV deal at Paramount, with Justin Simien attached, appears to have lapsed.

The book: Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's post-apocalyptic series launched from Image in April 2021. It's set in a nuked-out Las Vegas in 2050 and follows Geiger, a radioactive survivor. It's the book that kicked off Johns and Frank's creator-owned universe.

King of Spies: Millar's Next Netflix Shoot

The news: At High Viz Comic Con in Birmingham, Mark Millar said King of Spies is the next Millarworld project to shoot for Netflix, ahead of Nemesis and The Magic Order (as reported by What's on Netflix on October 8, 2026). No director, cast or release window has been announced. Millar called it the book he's happiest with of anything he's done.

The book: A four-issue series by Millar and Matteo Scalera from Image, launched in December 2021. Sir Roland King, Britain's greatest secret agent, learns he has six months to live and decides to take out everyone he thinks deserves it. Only his estranged son can stop him.

D'Orc: Sony Grabs the Breakout Hit of 2026

The news: Deadline reported on October 19, 2026 that Sony acquired the live-action film rights to D'Orc, with creator Brett Bean attached to adapt. No director or cast yet.

The book: Bean writes and draws this Image fantasy series, which launched in February 2026 and has been selling out ever since. ComicBookMovie reported on October 22, 2026 that #1 was in its eighth printing, that Image says #2 topped 70,000 orders, and that raw first prints of #1 sold on eBay for around $300 after the Sony news. Those are individual sales, not a price guide.

  • D'Orc #1 (2026), variant: A 2026 variant of #1. It's not a first-print Cover A, but it's a way to get the hottest indie #1 of the year on your shelf.

Barbaric: Netflix Orders the Series

The news: This one is real. Netflix greenlit a live-action Barbaric series as part of its May 2026 Upfront announcements. Sheldon Turner (X-Men: First Class) and Robert Rovner are the showrunners, and Sam Claflin is an executive producer. No cast has been announced yet.

The book: Michael Moreci and Nathan Gooden's 2021 Vault Comics series follows Owen the Barbarian, cursed to do good deeds, who travels with a talking axe and a serious grudge against witches. It's been pitched as Deadpool meets Game of Thrones, and that's about right.

Stillwater: Prime Video Casts Its Lead

The news: Amazon ordered an eight-episode Stillwater horror series in July 2026, from Greg Berlanti and Carly Wray with Warner Bros. Television. In late September 2026, Ben Hardy was cast as the lead, Daniel West, an ex-con who follows a letter to a town where nobody ages, nobody dies and nobody can leave.

The book: Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K. Pérez's series from Skybound.

Still in Development: BRZRKR and Grim

BRZRKR

The news: Netflix announced a BRZRKR live-action film and an anime series back in 2021, with Keanu Reeves starring and producing. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) is writing, and in March 2025 Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) was set to direct. There's still no release date.

The book: Reeves co-wrote it with Matt Kindt, with art by Ron Garney, for BOOM! Studios. Bleeding Cool reported in March 2021 that #1 had 615,000 copies ordered by comic shops. That's a lot of copies, so condition and specific covers matter more than usual here.

Grim

The news: In November 2025, Netflix began developing an adult animated Grim series. Wednesday creators Al Gough and Miles Millar are executive producing, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson is directing. It's in development, with no premiere date.

The book: Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano's supernatural horror series from BOOM! Studios. It launched in 2022 and finished its 25-issue run in November 2025.

The Collector's Take

Indie #1s live and die by the news. A series order or a big casting can move a book overnight. An option that goes quiet for a few years can let it cool off again. Barbaric and Stillwater have the firmest footing right now. Geiger and King of Spies have the biggest names. D'Orc is the one everyone's chasing. If you love the story, it's a good time to grab the #1 while it's still a reading copy price. Browse more key issues or check our pre-orders, which are 20% off cover.
